Maruti's CNG sales jumps 23 percent in 2014-15 - IAB Report

Maruti Suzuki's phenomenal sales record for the last fiscal also accounted for the highest number of CNG vehicles ever sold. Total sales of CNG vehicles grew from 4.9 percent of the entire sales to 5.4 percent. In absolute numbers, sales of CNG vehicles grew from 51,631 units in 2013-14 to 62,996 units in 2014-15, a growth of 23 percent.

The CNG variants of the Alto K-10 and Celerio were launched during a fiscal in which Maruti Suzuki enjoyed 11.11 percent growth.

The company became the first OEM in the country to launch factory-fitted CNG models back in 2010. At present, the company offers dual fuel (CNG+petrol) options in six of its models, namely the Alto, Alto K-10, Celerio, Wagon R, Eeco, and Ertiga. Two CNG variants, the Alto K-10 and Celerio, were launched in the 2014-15 fiscal year.

Understandably, Maruti's bulk of CNG-fitted vehicle sales come from cities where CNG infrastructure is already in place. Almost 50 percent of all Wagon R, Eeco, and Ertiga models sold in Delhi and Mumbai, the company notes, are of the CNG variant.

The Ertiga is the biggest CNG-equipped Maruti vehicle on sale.

Maruti Suzuki ended the 2014-15 fiscal with a 11.11 percent jump in sales, going from 1,053,689 units in 2013-14 to 1,170,702 units in 2014-15. After suffering relatively flat growth of 0.3 percent in 2013-14 over 2012-13, the growth must come as a relief to the country's largest passenger vehicle manufacturer.
