The Maruti Ertiga celebrated its world debut at Auto Expo 2012 and went on sale in April 2012.

The Maruti Ertiga, which currently has a monthly sales average of 3,196 units (May - October 2018), had a strong start to its career with 10,000 units booked within five days of its market launch. In June 2013, the carmaker launched a CNG version of its popular MPV. With this, the LXI and VXI trims received a factory-fitted converter kit.

The CNG version features i-GPI technology (intelligent-Gas Port Injection), which employs a dual engine control unit that provides a calibrated amount of fuel to the motor. This, as per the company, leads to an optimised fuel efficiency figure of 22.8 km/kg. The introduction of the factory-fitted CNG kit boosted the MPV's popularity in the commercial vehicle market.

The Maruti Ertiga received a facelift in October 2015. The biggest highlight of the mid-cycle refresh was the introduction of the SHVS mild-hybrid technology in the D13A 1.3-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The petrol variants feature the K14B 1.4-litre unit carried over from the pre-facelift version without any change. Another highlight was the introduction of the SmartPlay infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It is dimensionally larger than the current version, which is reportedly all set to become a taxi-only model with the 'Tour' moniker.
