Mercedes GLS vs Audi Q7 vs BMW X5 vs Volvo XC90 - Comparo

Mercedes GLS was launched for sale on May 18.

Mercedes India has launched the Mercedes GLS for sale in the country at prices starting from INR 84.01 Lakhs (ex-showroom Mumbai). Here's its technical comparison with the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Volvo XC90.

With respect to dimensions, the Mercedes GLS is the biggest SUV by a small margin. However, it's also the heaviest, tipping the scales at 2,455 kg (kerb weight), which has lowered the power to weight ratio, compared to its rivals. All four luxury SUVs offer 7 seats spread across three rows in their top-end grades.

Save for the Volvo XC90, the rest of the SUVs are powered by six cylinder turbodiesel engine with little output difference. The GLS's 3.0L V6 does provide more torque, while the Audi Q7 appears to offer better performance off the line, thanks to the light MLB Evo platform. One of the most significant upgrades in the GLS is the 9G-TRONIC 9-speed auto, which is claimed to offer smooth drivability and better fuel efficiency.

With only one grade available, the Mercedes GLS sits slightly higher than its German rivals in price.

Owing to its CBU status, the Volvo XC90 is the costliest vehicle in the segment, while the locally-assembled BMW X5 is the least expensive. With only one grade available, the Mercedes GLS sits slightly higher than its German rivals, but is still less expensive than the Swede.
