The Baojun 530 is arriving in India next year as the MG Gloster (Name TBA), and it will have a vaguely different design from the original SAIC product. IAB’s illustrator Shoeb Kalania shows the expected changes to the Indian-spec.

Compared to the Baojun 530, according to spy shots, the MG Gloster features a different grille and centre console design.

The Gloster has to bear the identity of an MG, and its gets there using the 'star rider' grille, a signature feature of the brand, featuring the octagonal logo. The unique alloy wheel design and the chrome work on the body are other adaptations, while the rest is expected same as that of the Baojun 530. As for the cabin, a spy shot has revealed that SAIC has used the Baojun 560’s centre console design for a more opulent look. The final design of the cabin will become clear in the coming months.

The MG Gloster will measure around 4.66 metres in length, 1.83 metres in width and 1.76 metres in height. SAIC will offer it with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, both complying with BSVI emission norms. The latter will be licensed from FCA India. Transmission choices may include 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic. There’s no word on the availability of an AWD, a feature that Tata Motors has deemed unnecessary for the Harrier which operates in that segment.

SAIC will have to price the MG Gloster competitively to make it seem like a value-for-money offering, say as compared to the Jeep Compass and the Mahindra XUV500. Expect the entry-level configuration’s price to fall under INR 15 lakh (ex-showroom). The commercial launch will take place in Q2 2019 (April-June 2019). An expanded three-row version with 7- and 8-seat options may follow later during the lifecycle as MG India's flagship SUV.
