Next-gen 2020 Mahindra Scorpio front-end - IAB Rendering

Mahindra has started testing the next-gen Scorpio as it prepares for its launch next year. IAB's digital artist Shoeb Kalania has created a rendering of its front-end using all the details revealed by its spy shots.

The next-gen Scorpio has been developed at the Mahindra North American Technical Centre (MNATC).

For the first time since the launch in 2002, the Mahindra Scorpio is set to undergo a revolutionary makeover. Spy shots suggest that it will be thoroughly redesigned and that there will be substantial changes in terms of proportions too. The rendering shows the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio featuring a more assertive, hexagonal radiator grille with chrome vertical slats and rounded ends, more angular projector headlamps, high-set bonnet with a sharper air scoop, wider lower grille, vertical fog lamp housings, new bumper and a wider skid plate.

Coming to the profile, the next-gen Scorpio will be a slightly more hunched back vehicle compared to the current model which has a fully upright stance. Following the latest design trends, its back glass will be slightly raked, and there will be a noticeable rise in the beltline from the middle of the rear doors. The wheel arches will be more muscular to underline the vehicle's ruggedness. Overall, Mahindra will fully transform the looks of the Scorpio from bumper to bumper, making it a radically new product which, however, still retains the original character of the SUV.

As seen in the interior spy reports, the all-new Scorpio will have a taller and wider dashboard layout. Vertical central air vents will be in place of horizontal vents, and between them, there'll be a new touchscreen infotainment system. Several bits like steering wheel, gear knob, control stalks and instrument cluster could be lifted from the Marazzo. This will help the company to keep the development and production costs under check.

The 2020 Mahindra Scorpio is said to be underpinned by an upgraded chassis of the outgoing model.

Mahindra will employ an all-new, BS-VI 2.0-litre diesel engine which will be tuned to deliver a maximum power of 160 PS, in the next-gen Scorpio. This new unit will be 80 kg lighter than the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that powers the outgoing model. The transmission choices will likely include 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic units. Mahindra might offer a 4WD system optionally.

The next-gen Mahindra Scorpio will likely be priced from somewhere between INR 10-11 lakh (ex-showroom).
