Next generation Mercedes GLE spotted testing for the first time

Codenamed W167.

The next generation Mercedes GLE was spotted testing for the first time, as seen in new spyshots from Motor 1. It is expected to go on sale in 2018, nearly seven years after the current GLE (then called M-Class) was launched.

The next gen Mercedes GLE is expected to go on sale in 2018, nearly seven years after the current model (then called M-Class) was launched.

The test mule has the codename 'W167' scribed on the tailgate, giving it away that the model on test is indeed the next Mercedes GLE, as the current GLE is codenamed 'W166'. Given that this is one of the early prototypes of the mid-size SUV, there's not much that can be said about the exterior design, save for a redesigned greenhouse at the rear and slightly longer wheelbase (by the looks of it).

The all new 2019 Mercedes GLE is rumored to ride on Mercedes-Benz’s new Modular High Architecture (MHA), which will underpin all of Merc's bigger crossovers and SUVs. Engine lineup is reported to replace the V6 engine options in the current model for a new range of turbocharged, inline six-cylinder engines.

It's been nearly eight months since the new Mercedes GLE was launched for sale in India, and Mercedes has already commenced development of the next one. Prices start from INR 58.9 Lakhs, and it is locally assembled at their plant in Chakan, Pune.
