According to a report on CarWale, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) will rationalize the automated manual transmission (AMT) technology to future products including the next-generation Grand i10, the next i20 and the sub-4 meter SUV codenamed QXi.

Hyundai currently offers a 4-speed torque converter on the Grand i10 and Xcent, whereas the i20 was given a CVT with the facelift.

Hyundai will introduce its AMT tech dubbed 'Smart Auto' on the 2018 Hyundai Santro (Hyundai AH2 codename) on October 4. The introduction of the low-cost automatic gearbox has been a long time coming from the Korean carmaker especially since rival Maruti has quickly adapted it to most of its fleet (Maruti was the first to launch the AMT on passenger cars in India with the Celerio is 2014).

In crucial mini and compact segments where Hyundai and Maruti compete, the latter has always had the edge. In the mini car segment, the Hyundai Eon is not available with an automatic to begin with whereas Maruti offers the Alto K10 AMT and in the compact segment the Grand i10 uses an old-school 4-speed torque converter whereas the new Swift is available with an AMT in petrol and diesel variants. The story is the same with the Xcent and Dzire. AMT has clicked for Maruti which has an ambition to sell 3 lakh cars a year with the two-pedal technology by 2020.

The upcoming 2018 Hyundai Santro will debut the AMT tech for the Korean carmaker dubbed 'Smart Auto'. AMT offers two-pedal convience with the same maintenance cost and fuel efficiency of the equivalent manual transmission.

The next generation Hyundai Grand i10 and i20 are expected before 2020, but the former could launch as early as next year given that the current Grand i10 came in September 2013. Before these products though, HMIL will introduce the QXi in H1 2019. The sub-4 meter SUV is expected to be styled along the lines of the Hyundai Carlino concept and will debut a new 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine.
