Report - Mahindra S102 mini SUV, Ssangyong X100 to receive brand new petrol engines

Autocar India has reported that a range of petrol engines are in the skunk works of Mahindra for its future Indian model range.

Three motors are under joint development with Ssangyong in the displacement range of 1.2-liter to 1.6-liter. Future Ssangyong products would also use these engines, in India and internationally.

The Ssangyong X100 (previewed by the Ssangyong XLV concept) would get the top-end 1.6-liter engine from the new family.

While the higher displacement variants are four-cylinder mills, the 1.2-liter motor would be a three-cylinder unit first employed on the Mahindra S102. The S102 is a compact SUV (to be positioned above the S101) built on the Ssangyong X100's platform. The Autocar report states that the S102 would be positioned under the Quanto, pointing that it is another sub-4m vehicle.

The S102 and the S101 (pictured) would employ the base 1.2-liter three-cylinder variant.

Common parts usage across the range would give cost benefit, and the engine would be Euro VI compliant, with capability to meet stricter emission standards. Mahindra Research Valley, the company’s R&D facility on the outskirts of Chennai, is carrying out the bulk of the development and engine expert AVL of Austria, who have helped numerously in developing engines for two-wheeler and four-wheeler offerings from Indian OEMs, is reportedly a consultant for this project, the report claims.
