Suzuki announces 3 plants in Gujarat, foundation stone laid for the first - IAB Report
First plant is set to start production in mid-2017.
The foundation stone for the first of three Suzuki plants to be set up in Hansalpur, Gujarat, was laid today in a special ceremony. An investment of about INR 3,000 crore is allocated for the plant.
The vehicles manufactured here will be supplied exclusively to Maruti Suzuki India Limited, but the ownership of the plants remains with the Suzuki, as announced last year. The first manufacturing facility is scheduled to function from mid-2017, with an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles. The three plants will eventually ramp up the total production to 750,000 vehicles annually, helping Maruti Suzuki to reach 2 million units sales per year.
Spread over 640 acres, there will also be an integrated supplier park in the campus. The foundation stone for the first plant was laid by Gujarat's CM Ms. Anandiben Patel, in the presence of dignitaries from MSIL as well as the Suzuki Group.

Commenting on the plant, which is in line with the 'Make in India' revolution, Mr. Osamu Suzuki, Chairman and CEO of Suzuki Motor Corp., Japan, said, "We want to manufacture vehicles together with you, which we can provide for the domestic and global markets. Your support and cooperation will be greatly appreciated."
Though Maruti remained mum on the models that will be manufactured at the facility, a media report said earlier this month that the next generation Wagon R that would have a three-row seating variant and a diesel engine, would be manufactured here.
