Global NCAP, the world’s foremost authority in safety evaluation & research and also the testing agency responsible for conducting crash test assessments of several Indian cars, has awarded a 4/5 star rating for the made-in-India Toyota Etios series. The 4-star GNCAP rating comes on the back of dual front SRS airbags which are standardized across the Etios range. In the Indian market, Toyota sells the Etios, the Liva and the Etios Cross variants, which are well appreciated in their segments.

In January of 2015, Toyota Kirloskar Motor became the first manufacturer in India to standardize dual front airbags across all its models and variants.

The testing was part of Global NCAP's 'SaferCarsForIndia' campaign, and a full frontal crash test was conducted at a speed of 64 km/h. For AOP (Adult Occupant Protection), the Etios, Liva and Etios Cross received a score of 13/16 which translates to 4/5 stars.

The testing agency notes that in the frontal impact, the driver and passenger heads were both well protected by the dual front SRS airbags and seatbelts. Both seatbelts were equipped with pretensioners and force limiters, which is again part of the standard fitment. The car's structure can withstand further loadings, the report adds.

David Ward, Global NCAP Secretary General congratulated the standardization of dual front SRS airbags on the Etios range and its 4-star GNCAP safety rating, and encouraged all car manufacturers to follow suit. “It is impressive to see a major manufacturer achieve a four star result and we look forward to the first five star car in India", he added.

Aside from offering dual SRS front airbags and seatbelts with pretensioners and force limiters, the Etios, Liva and Etios Cross are also equipped with ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, foglights, rear defogger, immobilizer, driver seat belt reminder warning with buzzer and an impact absorbing body.

In the Indian market, the Etios is priced from INR 6.46* lakhs to INR 8.9* lakhs, available with a 1.4-liter petrol engine or 1.3-liter diesel engine, the Liva is priced from INR 4.98* lakhs to INR 7.37* lakhs, and is available with a 1.2-liter petrol engine or a 1.4-liter diesel engine, and the Etios Cross is priced from INR 6.4* lakhs to INR 8.1* lakhs with an option of 1.1 or 1.4 litre petrol engines, or a 1.3-liter diesel engine. Both engine options get a 5-speed manual transmission.  (*Ex-showroom price Bangalore)
