Petrol engine for Toyota Innova Crysta could be made in India
Investment on Indian operations halted for now.
Given the uncertainty on the future of diesel engines displacing over 2.0-liters, which is currently banned in the Delhi NCR region, LiveMint's sources claim that Toyota Kirloskar Motor could manufacture petrol engines in India.
At the moment, Toyota has halted any new investments on its Indian operations and does not plan to launch any model until a definitive plan has been made. However, TKM is committed to launching the Toyota Innova Crysta, which is reported to take place in May. For the Delhi NCR region, the Innova Crysta is likely to be offered with a petrol engine.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor were planning to manufacture the latest range of GD diesel engines at a new engine assembly plant in Jigani, Karnataka, which would power the Toyota Innova Crysta and the next generation Toyota Fortuner. The report suggests that Toyota could also manufacture petrol engines to keep prices competitive, and is expected to discuss with suppliers this month.

The Delhi NCR is one of Toyota's most important regions in the country, as it accounts for 15% of the company's total sales. Since the ban, sales have dropped by 41% to 7,637 units last month as compared to March 2015. The only models customers are allowed to register are the Toyota Etios range and Corolla Altis, while the more popular Toyota Innova and Fortuner are affected by the ban.
