Two new five-cylinder Volvo diesel engines on the S80 this year

Two new five-cylinder 2.4-liter diesel engines, with twin turbos and single turbo, from Volvo will be available on the Volvo S80 sedan this year, as reported earlier. The diesel engines will also have roles to play on the company's other cars like the XC60 and XC70 SUVs.

Volvo 2.4-liter Five-cylinder twin turbo diesel engine-

uses piezoelectric fuel injectors- More precise fuel delivery; leaks and wastage avoided

twin turbochargers of different sizes operate in sequence to provide added power within broader RPM- better driveability; lower gear changes; in all probability, a rev-happy engine

higher levels of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) across wider RPM- lesser Nox formation making it eco-friendly, engine lasts longer life, lesser oil consumption due to lesser chamber temperatures

Volvo 2.4-liter Five-cylinder single turbo diesel engine-

lesser power but same torque as twin-turbo

more fuel efficient, but comparatively higher emissions

use of single turbo costs lesser

engine friction reportedly lesser compared to departing engine, meaning higher mechanical efficiency, lower maintenance costs

The use of ceramic ceramic glow plugs on both engines makes for quicker starts in cold weather
