Official images of the Volvo XC40 have surfaced on numerous social media pages just days ahead of its official global premiere on September 21, 2017. The leak comes via the company itself as Volvo Hungary inadvertently shared a trailer revealing the crossover.

Volvo XC40 leaked side view
The exterior of the Volvo XC40 is largely identical to the Volvo 40.1 concept showcased last year.

The leaked video reveals the car completely. As anticipated, the Volvo XC40 looks nearly identical to the Volvo 40.1 Concept unveiled in May last year. It features Volvo's instantly recognisable design language. It follows the same basic principles - clean, simple lines, classic proportions and striking details - as the XC60, XC90, and V90.

The front end features the Thor's Hammer LED DRLs, which has become a staple Volvo design trait. The also features an upright grille finished in gloss black with the iron mark housing the logo in chrome. Its side profile reveals a window line that tapers upwards towards the C-pillar and forms the outline of the dual tone black and white colour scheme. A strong shoulder line with a vertical LED tail lamp setup defines the XC40's rear end.

Much like the exterior, the cabin looks familiar thanks to its resemblance to bigger Volvos. The centre console, angled towards the driver, gets a large vertically stacked touchscreen complemented by vertical air conditioning vents. The Volvo XC40 will feature inductive charging for smartphones.

This particular model seems to be the top-end R-Design spec. The exterior colour scheme and the degree of chrome applique on the grille and other exterior bits may vary on the rest of the trims.

Volvo XC40 leaked centre console
The centre console's similarity to other Volvo products including the XC90, S90, and the XC60 is unmissable.

This is the first Volvo product based on the Compact Modular Architecture platform (CMA) co-developed with Chinese owners Geely. The Volvo XC40 will employ a new 1.5 L turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine. A plug-in hybrid variant badged 'T5' mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission will also be a part of the lineup.

A confirmation is yet to come but the XC40 is a given for the Indian market next year.
