Volkswagen has launched the old VW Polo with a 1.0-litre MPI petrol engine in India. The 1.0-litre MPI engine replaces the 1.2-litre MPI engine in the car.

The 1.0L MPI petrol engine is more powerful but not as torquey as the 1.2L MPI petrol engine.

The discontinued 1.2-litre MPI three-cylinder petrol engine produces 75 PS at 5,400 rpm and 110 Nm of torque at 3,750 rpm. The new 1.0-litre MPI three-cylinder petrol engine develops 76 PS at 6,200 rpm and 95 Nm of torque at 3,000-4,300 rpm. So, while the maximum power has increased by 1 PS, the maximum torque has reduced by 15 Nm. Like the old engine, the new engine is coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard.

The Polo 1.0L MPI is 18 kg (Trendline)/24 kg (Comfortline)/14 kg (Highline and Highline+) lighter than the 1.2L MPI variant. The 1.0-litre engine delivers a fuel economy of 18.78 km/l, marking an improvement of 2.31 km/l. The MQB platform-based sixth-gen VW Polo is also likely to use the new 1.0-litre MPI petrol engine as the base option. This redesigned model won’t arrive anytime before 2020, though.
