VW Polo-based SUV starts road tests

VW crossover range to include 5 models in the future.

The next-gen VW Polo is arriving next year and will reportedly enter production in June 2017. The sixth generation VW Polo won't have a 3-door hatchback version, but will have a crossover based on it. VW has started development of the new crossover, spyshots published by motor.es reveal. The company is testing the future crossover in a modified VW Golf Mk7 body. One of the clearly visible changes from the regular VW Golf is the increased ground clearance.

VW showed its interest in the compact crossover segment by showing the VW T-Cross Breeze concept at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The convertible crossover concept indirectly also previewed the likely exterior of the next-gen 2017 VW Polo hatchback.

The new compact crossover will share the MQB platform and the engines, transmissions and many other elements with the next-gen VW Polo. The latter will be offered with an array of petrol and diesel engines with displacements ranging from 1.0- to 1.8-litre, and 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions.

Volkswagen plans to have five crossovers in the model range in the future and the new VW Polo-based crossover will be one of them. Three more of the remaining four are already known: VW Tiguan, VW Tiguan XL and a new VW Touareg.
