Is this the Yamaha FZ200/Yamaha FZ250 for India?

Is Yamaha finally entering the 200 cc club?

An upcoming motorcycle from Yamaha has been spotted by Overdrive in the national capital.

The new motorcycle is likely to heavily rely on the Yamaha R&D center in Chennai.

While their next premium offering was expected to be the Yamaha MT-03, they seem to be getting ready for something different. The MT-03 is the naked version of the twin cylinder R3 which has been the flagship in India since August 2015.

Careful observation of the spy shots reveal that the bike has a single cylinder engine. That’s not all. The steel braided wires next to the engine mean that it can be an oil cooled mill. Are we looking at a new motorcycle with a possible 200-250 cc displacement?

The crankcase cover has a similar design as the existing models, and so is the case of the short stubby exhaust canister. The disc brake seem to have been lifted from the Yamaha M-Slaz sold in Indonesia, Bangladesh and other South-East Asian markets. The LED headlamp console too has been lifted from the M-Slaz.

The Yamaha motorcycle has features from the M-Slaz (pictured) and the FZ family.

The front suspension gets right side down forks and a monoshock in the rear. The muscular body style follows the FZ family. A 200-250 cc FZ would be an interesting offering not just for India but also the Indonesian market.

During development, the bike will rely on the newly inaugurated R&D facility inside the Chennai plant, and could be manufactured completely in India, slotting between the 2017 Yamaha R15 and R3 in the local lineup.
