Yamaha XSR155 top speed attempt caught on camera

The Yamaha XSR155 is the latest offering based on the Japanese two-wheeler maker’s R15 v3.0 platform. The retro-styled motorcycle was launched last week in Thailand and is expected to hit the Indonesian market later this year. A top speed run attempt of the Yamaha XSR155 has come up on YouTube. The bike manages to hit 125 km/h (speedo indicated) on the fifth cog, which means that the machine still has more grunt left in it.

While the speedo indicated reading for the 5th cog is 125 km/h, we believe that the Yamaha XSR155 can go way beyond that.

Powering the Yamaha XSR155 is the same 155cc liquid-cooled, 4-valve DOHC mill as the R15 v3.0. The engine can produce 19.3 PS of power and 14.7 Nm of torque. Variable Valve Actuation, a technology similar to the one seen in the 2019 BMW S1000RR, helps in producing ideal amounts of power across all engine speeds.

The Yamaha XSR 155 is lighter than the R15 v3.0 (ASEAN version) by 3 kilos, but it is still slower. That is because the aerodynamically optimised fairing of R15 v3.0 helps in reducing air-drag.

Yamaha India is expected to launch the Yamaha XSR155 in 2020. However, to keep costs under check, several parts will likely be swapped for less expensive options. Just like the MT-15 retailed in India, expect the bike to get conventional telescopic fork upfront and box-type swingarm. However, Yamaha will retain VVA and slipper clutch.

Besides the four colour options for the Yamaha XSR155, the manufacturer also showcased three custom builds based on the retro-naked. These include a scrambler, a tracker and a café-racer. However, neither of these will be mass-produced immediately. The motorcycle maker though is reportedly working on a new dual-purpose motorcycle with the same 155 cc VVA powerplant.

Internationally, Yamaha is also working on an update for the Yamaha MT-25 / MT-03 and NMax 155.
