The India-bound 2019 Yamaha R3 is officially out in Indonesia and Thailand. Let’s take a look at the changes brought to the lightweight supersport Yamaha R3 2019 motorcycle with the mid-cycle update.
Design
The 2019 Yamaha R3 sports a radical design, which is inspired by the Yamaha YZR-M1 MotoGP bike. The motorcycle boasts of a sharp front fascia with twin LED headlights, a faux RAM air intake and a tall double bubble windshield. The side fairing, fuel tank design and front fender have been revised to offer a sharper look. That said, the tail section and alloy wheels remain unchanged.
On the other hand, the old Yamaha R3, which is currently on sale in India, features conventional halogen headlamps and relaxed ergonomics. The fuel tank is angular in design while the side fairing has multiple cuts and creases as compared to the new model.

As far as features go, the new Yamaha R3 comes with 37 mm KYB upside-down forks at the front and a bottom-link preload-adjustable KYB mono-shock at the rear, as well as an all-digital instrument cluster. On the flip side, the old Yamaha R3 comes with conventional telescopic front forks, a link-type mono-shock at the back, and a semi-digital instrument cluster.
Dual-channel ABS continues to be optional. Both the motorcycles feature the same 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels that wrap in 110-section front and 160-section rear tubeless radial tyres.
Engine Specifications
While the design and features list have been slightly updated on the Yamaha R3, the engine specifications have remained unchanged. The motorcycle continues to employ a 321 cc parallel-twin, liquid-cooled, DOHC engine that is mated to a 6-speed transmission.
The fuel-injected motor delivers a maximum power of 42 PS at 10,750 rpm along with a peak torque of 29.6 Nm at 9,000 rpm. That said, the aerodynamic front fairing and the relative lower kerb weight of 167 kg (the old model weighs 173 kg) have resulted in an increase of top speed by 8 km/h.
