Fresh Tata H5X spy shots reveal new exterior details

Camouflaged test mules of the production version of the Tata H5X Concept have been snapped on public roads on multiple occasions. The spy shots emerging this time around, courtesy CarDekho, reveal a more about the upcoming SUV as it inches closer to production.

Tata H5X spied in production guise
The deep recess just below the tail lamp mimics that of the Tata H5X Concept that was unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo earlier this year in February.

Until now, camouflaged test units have been seen sporting pre-production headlights and tail lights. The test mule appears to be equipped with production spec tail lamps. The image of the rear section also reveals a deep recess under the windshield quite similar to the H5X Concept's roof spoiler. Other noticeable features include a rear wiper, black wheel arch cladding, and production-spec door handles.

The Tata H5X test unit rides on 5-spoke alloy wheels finished in black. These may well make it production. They are similar in design to the ones offered on entry level trims of the Land Rover Discovery Sport in certain markets. Pratap Bose, Head of Design, Tata Motors, has said that design wise, 80-85% of the concept will transition into production. Based on the images here, this fact seems to hold true. At least for the side profile.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport's platform forms the basis of the Tata H5X albeit in an altered form. Engineers have substituted some of the relatively expensive aluminium bits with steel to keep costs in check. The cabin will have seating for 5, although a 7-seat variant is also expected.

The diesel variant, which is likely to be the primary sales driver, will employ a Fiat-sourced 2.0 L Multijet II engine. This engine already powers the Jeep Compass in India. There is a talk of a petrol variant and a subsequent hybrid model based on it as well. But, in all probability, at the time of launch, there won't be a Tata H5X hybrid on offer.

As per a report from last month, the production-ready Tata H5X will be unveiled in November 2018. However, its market launch is not expected to take place until the first quarter of 2019. Rivals of the upcoming Tata SUV will include the Hyundai Creta and even entry-level grades of the Jeep Compass.
