New Mahindra Imperio pickup range to launch in early January - Report

Mahindra & Mahindra has announced its plan to launch a new range of pickup trucks under the Mahindra Imperio banner in early January 2016. The new pickup is expected to strengthen the company's leadership in the Small Commercial Vehicle segment, says the company.

The Mahindra Imperio would be positioned above the Mahindra Bolero pickup.

The Imperio is touted as a stylish and comfortable pickup with notable performance that caters to the small and medium businesses (SMEs). Mr. Pravin Shah, President & Chief Executive (Automotive) of Mahindra & Mahindra, says the Imperio has been designed to plug certain gaps in the needs on the customer side, which will help consolidate the company's leadership in the commercial vehicle sector. Mahindra currently has 53 percent market share (YTD November 2015) in the Light Commercial Vehicle segment which comprises of vehicles that have under 3.5 ton load capacity.

The Imperio would be touted as an upmarket alternative to the Genio.

The Mahindra Imperio has been conceptualized and developed in-house at Mahindra Research Valley, Chennai. It will be produced at the company's manufacturing facility at Chakan, Pune. To rival the likes of the Isuzu D-Max pickup, the Imperio is likely to use the same engine that is doing duty in the Genio, which is the 2.5-litre diesel motor that produces 75 hp of maximum power. The motor is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
