Renault is designing Bajaj's low cost car
French manufacturer Renault Motors is designing the entry-level low cost car (codenamed ULC) that it going to be rolled out jointly with Nissan Motors and Bajaj Auto from their Chakan unit in Maharashtra by 2011.
The final shape of the car has already been decided and the French automaker's team will continue its styling until its production. The finishing touches will be done by the Boulogne-Billancourt-based company's Mumbai design centre. The car is the much anticipated rival of the Tata Nano(though nothing has been claimed by Bajaj).
Renault India Private Limited , on September 24, 2008, inaugurated a new high-security design facility in Mumbai, which will work in tandem with the company's other designing centres located in France, South Korea, Brazil etc. This is the third design studio Renault has globally opened this year. The company opened one in Sao Paulo in Brazil and another in Bucharest in Romania during 2008 and has now five design centres globally.
Within the next couple of years, there will be an expansion of design work in India as the company plans to have a design facility in Chennai too. The Renault-Nissan-Bajaj consortium is awaiting market response for the Tata Nano, in order to decide on the final specifications of the project.
