Renault Kwid accounts for 75% of Renault India's sales

Expected to reach the 100,000 milestone by the end of this year.

In an interview with ET Auto, Managing director of Renault India, Mr. Sumit Sawhney has confirmed that out of 87,000 Renault cars sold in India between January 2016 and August 2016, 65,000 units are the Renault Kwid. Renault is expected to reach the 100,000 milestone by the end of this year.

The numbers are expected to further increase in the coming months now that Renault introduced the 1.0L version last month.

In August, it crossed the 10,000 monthly sales mark for the first time; selling 10,719 units. This made it the seventh best-selling car in India. The numbers are expected to further increase in the coming months now that Renault introduced the 1.0L version last month at prices starting from INR 3.83 Lakhs – around INR 22,000 more expensive than the Kwid 0.8L RxT.

Renault will also roll out the 1.0L AMT variant in the coming weeks, which is equipped with a 5-speed Easy-R AMT unit. This should further widen the appeal of the Maruti Alto-rival in India.

A couple of reasons why the Kwid became successful can be attributed to the underlying CMF platform, which has been localised by 98 percent, thus allowing Renault to price it competitively. Secondly, it's the most feature-packed A-segment hatchback in India, offering features such as a digital instrument cluster, 7-inch MEDIANAV touchscreen system, which are first-in-class features.
