Renault is planning on developing yet another volume driver for the Indian market - a sub-compact sedan. Like the Renault Triber, this would be a sub-4 metre model.

The Renault sub-compact sedan is expected to see a market launch in 2021.

Renault is developing an India-specific car which also has the potential for the international markets such as Latin America, South East Asia and Africa. The latter, on the other hand, has immense potential for India-made products and drives huge volumes especially in the affordable sub-compact segment models because of their affordability.

The sub-4 metre sedan segment which currently has several competitors from some very established brands such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda and Ford. The company is planning a 2021 launch for this model. The sub-compact sedan segment witnessed a growth of 12% in the FY'19 and stood at 4.6 lakh units. The only segment which saw a faster growth was the sub-compact SUV space, but the sedan segment churned higher volumes.

The upcoming Renault sub-compact sedan will most probably utilize the same CMF-A+ platform which also underpins the Renault Triber and will also be seen in the upcoming Renault HBC subcompact SUV. For the uninitiated, this platform has been derived from the CMF-A platform which is used for the Renault Kwid and the Datsun redi-GO. The company will utilise its learnings from the Triber development program which has given it new insights on the drivability and space management.

The subcompact sedan segment is highly famous among the private customers, as well as fleet owners and hence sales are driven from both the ends. But at the same time, the sub-compact SUV segment is growing at a faster rate and is becoming immensely popular in India. So, it won't be easy for the company to come up with a brand new product and make it popular against the rivals such as Maruti Dzire, Tata Tigor, Ford Aspire, Hyundai Xcent and more.
