Tata Motors has started testing the H7X on the roads. Several spy shots have surfaced online recently, giving the first proper look at the seven-seat C-SUV based on the Tata Harrier.

The Tata H7X will employ a 170 PS 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine.

The Tata H7X, previously referred to as the Tata Q502, is not as sporty as the Tata Harrier. As Vivek Srivatsa, Marketing Head, Tata Motors (PV), had told IAB in December, it looks “sufficiently different”.

To accommodate two extra rear seats, designers have reduced the degree of decline in the roof towards the rear. While the 5-seat model has a steeply raked tailgate, the 7-seat model’s tailgate looks quite upright. The more family-oriented version is 62 mm longer too, although it’s wheelbase the same (2,741 mm). The differences may include the longer, three-row version featuring bigger, 18-inch alloy wheels as well.

The Tata H7X will employ a more powerful version of the Kryotec 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is just a rebranded 2.0-litre MultiJet II diesel engine made by FCA. A trademark filing accessed by IAB suggests that this version will offer a maximum power of 170 PS, with the maximum torque remaining at 350 Nm. Tata Motors will likely call it ‘Kryotec170’.

In the Harrier a 6-speed manual transmission is standard. In the H7X, however, Tata Motors will offer a 6-speed automatic transmission as well. Sourced from Hyundai, the automatic unit will eventually make it to the Harrier. The same is expected for the Kryotec170 engine.

Tata Motors will offer a 6-speed automatic transmission option in the H7X.
