Production to start in December this year.

AutoToday has a rendering of the forthcoming Tata Kite (codename) hatchback, which is reported to enter production at Tata's Sanand, Gujarat, plant in December this year.

The Kite is based on a re-engineered version of the Indica X0 platform.

As reported earlier, the Kite will be based on a re-engineered version of the Indica's X0 platform, though it will preview an all-new design approach from Tata Motors. Designers will rework the 'Humanity' line (grille) of the hatchback with chrome accents to give it a more premium look. At the rear, the report states that the Kite will look similar to a Hyundai Grand i10, with a relatively squat appearance.

Inside, the Kite is reported to feature an all-new dashboard with the same touchscreen Harman entertainment system seen on the Bolt and Zest. Top-end variants of the Kite will get this infotainment system along with automatic climate control, which can also be accessed through the touchscreen display. Other features reported by the publication include steering mounted controls and electrically-adjustable ORVMs, and the range-topping 'XT' models should get dual front airbags, ABS and EBD.

The Kite will be priced and positioned below the Bolt, and will rival hatchbacks like the Maruti Celerio and the Chevrolet Beat.

On the powertrain front, reports say that the Kite, and the Kite-based compact sedan, will be powered by a new 1.2-liter petrol engine, and a 1.05-liter three-cylinder diesel engine. Tata could also choose to use their current Revotron petrol engine and the 1.3-liter Fiat-sourced Quadrajet diesel engine, paired to manual and automated manual transmissions.
